Nehemiah (Extra Credit)

Skim through Nehemiah. Note that much of this book is Nehemiah’s account of his own role in helping the rebuilding of Jerusalem and in restoring the Jewish people. Note the problems he faces. What does Nehemiah seem proud of in terms of his own record/conduct? What obstacles does he face? What seems to be his motivation?

Nehemiah faced many obstacles in the attempt to restore Israel or the jewish people. When he first arrives at Jerusalem the wall is broken down and the gates have burned down. When he tries to rebuild the wall Sanballat and Tobiah mock him and even threaten to stop him. This slows down the rebuilding because Nehemiah has to put half his laborers on guard duty. The Jewish people become disgruntled with lack of provisions and begin to complain. Through all of this Nehemiah perseveres and rebuilds the wall and the gate. Nehemiahs motivation for all of this seems to be to restore the Israelites as a people. However, he brings the law of God back to the people, and the people back to God.

Nehemiah was the king’s cup bearer. He seemed to be proud of getting himself sent on the first mission to Jerusalem with full powers to rebuild the walls. On his arrival at Jerusalem, Nehemiah lost no time; he inspected the state of the walls, and then took measures and gave orders.

It seemed the majority of opposition Nehemiah faced was from foreigners and Jews. Tobias and Gossem try by all means in their power, by slander, scoffs, threats of violence, and craft to hinder Nehemiah's work or ruin him.

His primary motivation seemed to be making Jerusalem into a grand city.

Nehemiah faced many problems and much opposition from Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite, and Gesham the Arab. They mocked and ridiculed Nehemiah and the people building the wall. Also Nehemiah and the others had to rebuild the wall from scratch because it was completely destroyed making it harder to rebuild. Nehemiah also had to deal with the possibility of attack from his opposition. He had to have half of the people working stand guard with weapons making the work go slower. Despite these problems Nehemiah is still motivated. He wants the city of his forefathers to be a great city again and to be to honor the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
